The 13 Words that Will Get Your Email Flagged

This is a list of words that supposedly cause the NSA to flag you as a potential terrorist if you over-use them in an email.

We found this on Reddit, where James Bamford, a veteran reporter with 30 years experience covering the NSA, is answering questions from the community. He just wrote a big profile for Wired on NSA director Keith Alexander that’s really good and well worth a read.

This list comes from Reddit user GloriousDawn, who found it on Attrition.org, a site that purports to follow the security industry, but the page was last updated in 1998. Take it with a grain of salt.

You may want to peruse this entire list yourself, but here are 13 of our favorites that stick out:

  • NSA
  • blacklist
  • privacy (or Priavacy?)
  • defense information
  • computer terrorism
  • information warfare
  • passwords
  • dictionary
  • sweeping
  • ionosphere
  • military intelligence
  • Steve Case
  • Scully

And the full list for your browsing pleasure:

Last update, 1998. Knowing the government as I do, I doubt that any of these were dropped off, but many were added on. The government is paranoid, but works on the principle that, “just because you’re paranoid, that doesn’t mean everyone is not out to get you.” One of the purposes of the government, according to the Constitution, is to ‘Provide for the Common Defence (sic).’ The problem we incur these days is the excessive efforts of the government in providing for the common defense by trampling the 4th Amendment. It is incumbent upon us to be aware and to protest when the government overreaches.

Interesting! I have had Hotmail refuse to pass through some emails, with which other providers had no problem. So Hotmail users beware, you may be missing mail!

Well, I guess that puts me (and most of the planet) on their list. …and good job guys, with this email going out to thousands of your subscribers, with all those words listed, it’s going to give them plenty to do the next few weeks. I’m sure they appreciate the job security… security… security… security… security. D5.

Thanks for all of the research that has been done to put this list together.
Although I don’t think that I have ever used any of the terms in my emails, it is good to know what not to use. “Fore Warned is Fore Armed” !!!

By the way, there is a typo above on the page. It is in the area marked “Facebook”. Patript Privacy instead of Patriot Privacy. Probably not is the list of words that would get one’s email flagged!

Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean that the governments (Fed, state, local, etc.) aren’t out to get you. Looks more and more like they are.
